Top Environmental Award for Cosmopolitan Hotels

Cosmopolitan Hotels are celebrating a double success after recently being awarded Gold and Silver status in the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).

The Erskine Bridge Hotel has achieved the highest accolade with the gold award with Normandy gaining silver.

Designed specially for tourism businesses, the Green Tourism Business Scheme can help reduce costs, improve efficiency and increase marketing potential, while also reducing the environmental impact of the business.

The middle standard 'Silver' requires a commitment to good environmental management (energy, water, waste) and continuous improvement while the highest standard ''Gold' is the most rigorous. Gold requires a commitment to continuous improvement and significant efforts in green purchasing and the screening of suppliers to encourage more environmentally responsible services.

Businesses meeting the GTBS standards will be promoted through internet marketing, providing visitors to Scotland with information on accommodation providers and other tourism businesses that are actively working to help protect the environment. The businesses will also benefit from discovering that good environmental management can also mean big cost savings.

Tom McWilliam, Glasgow Area Director said: “We would like to congratulate Cosmopolitan hotels on this fantastic achievement. Sustainability and sustainable growth are key challenges for VisitScotland and the tourism industry as a whole so it is very encouraging to see Glasgow businesses leading the way and highlighting to the rest of the industry the benefits associated with the scheme.

Steve Ireland, Managing Director of Cosmopolitan Hotels said: “The award scheme has without doubt helped our business improve energy consumption efficiency and improve our carbon footprint, whilst an enormous amount of work went into meeting award criteria we are already seeing considerable benefits and the effort is proving to be very worthwhile.”

Three levels of accreditation can be achieved under the scheme. Bronze which marks good basic environmental practice, Silver for very good practice or Gold, the top award which denotes excellence in environmental practice.
